Moses Sweeney
On August 11, 1832, Moses Sweeney, age 76, appeared in Buckingham County, Virginia to apply for his Revolutionary War Pension.
He indicated that he joined the war in 1776 under the command of Captain Thomas Pattison. Moses also indicated he underwent surgery after about 18 months of fighting. As a result of the surgery, he lost most of his teeth and part of his jawbone. He was then discharged from service and returned to Buckingham County.
A Certificate of Pension was issued the 3rd day of May and sent to William Duval, Buckingham Court House, Virginia. He received 60 dollars—-cents per annum to commence on the 4th day of March, 1831.
After his first wife died, he married Martha Gaddy Burruss of Bedford County, Virginia on 4 Sep 1826. They had one son, Joseph. Moses remained in Buckingham County where he raised his family and operated a mill. He died March 15, 1833. Moses owned about 1000 acres which is now part of the Appomattox Courthouse National Park. Moses worked on the formation of the County of Appomattox, Virginia prior to his death. A tombstone was erected for Moses in the Sweeney Family Cemetery, Appomattox Courthouse, VA.
